Is aluminium a sustainable material?

Just how sustainable is aluminium?

It’s estimated that up to 75% of all aluminium ever produced for construction is still in productive use.

The rise of aluminium in the construction industry began in the early part of the 20th century, with its breakthrough coming when it was used for much of the interior structures and iconic spire of the Empire State Building in New York. Today, aluminium is also the backbone of the award-winning Solarlux product range, including our Bi-folding Doors, Wintergardens, and Glass Canopies.

Durable, lightweight, recyclable and resistant to corrosion: these are some of the characteristics of aluminium. Modern manufacturing techniques have developed thermal breaks and specialist coating to add thermal efficiency and fire resistance to the list of positives. Aluminium is also one of the most sustainable materials available, making up more than 8% of the Earth’s core mass and well as being the 3rd most abundant material on the planet, after oxygen and silicon. These traits have made aluminium one of the most popular materials in the construction industry today.

Why is sustainability so important in business?

Sustainability. This isn’t just a buzzword that’s thrown around by politicians, it should be a priority that is taken seriously by everyone. On the heels of the release of a publication from one of the UK’s most influential think tanks calling for a sustainability act to be passed into law, everyone should ask what steps their business is taking to be more sustainable.

Solarlux has a deep commitment to sustainability and this is reflected in our accreditations. Our products are sustainably sourced, produced and certified in accordance with environmental standard ISO 14001. Our state-of-the-art factory in Melle, Germany, is certified in accordance with the German A.U.F. Recycling Loop, which has confirmed that our aluminium is recycled in an environmentally-conscious manner.

The wood used in our products is sourced from sustainable forestry and certified by the PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council). Water-based varnishes are used to treat our timber to solidify our promise to do our part to protect the planet.
